A BIT OF HISTORY

Between 1860 and WWI,9.000.000 italians left permanently of a total of 16 millions who emigrated, most from the south and most travelling to North or South America.Two-third of the migrants who left Italy between 1870-1914 were men with traditional skills.Poverty was the main reason for leaving.
Another factor was related to the overpopulation of southern Italy.this created a democraphic boom and forced the new generation to emigrate at the end of 19° century and the begining of the 20° century, mostly to the Americas.

20 milions stopped in Ellis island before finding a new life after a hard trip of 30 days. Most of italians skills men died in two of most important disasters in the history. In the 1907 in Monongah mining 171 italians miners died, they came from Calabria ( S. Giovanni in Fiore) Molise ( Frosolone,Duronia, Bagnoli del Trigno, Torella del Sannio) Abbruzzi ( Atri, Civitella Rovereto, Civita d'Antino, Canistro) and in the 1913 other 146 italians emigrated died in the Dawson disaster, knows nowdays with the name of Ghost town.

The United States was the main destination for italians immigrants, with most first settling in New York metropolitan area, but with other major Italian American Communities developing in Boston,Philadelphia, Chicago,    Cleveland, Detroit, S.Louis, Pittsburgh, Baltimore, S. Francisco & New Orleans but many immigrants went to Canada making them the third-largest ethnic group.Almost 1,000,000 italians reside in the Providence of  Ontario making it a strong global representation of the Italian diaspora.
